natural cherry wood furniture

Natural Cherry wood furniture is a favorite among our customers and people are always asking where the wood comes from.

We source as much wood as we can locally, preferably right here in Vermont. But cherry wood isn’t a big component of the Green Mountain Forest.

There are a few cherry trees here and there across Vermont, but Pennsylvania is really the Cherry Capitol of the world and that’s where we get most of our cherry wood. It is arguably the finest cherry wood on earth and is prized for its lovely red color, grain and luster.

At Vermont Woods Studios we feel it’s important to provide detailed information about where your furniture comes from.  We want customers to know that our wood is all sustainably harvested and that forest conservation is a fundamental part of our mission.

Fortunately for us, in 1995 the state of Pennsylvania had the foresight to protect and preserve a great deal of their cherry wood resources.  They committed to maintaining the state forest system sustainably and began green certifying it, by the Forest Stewardship Council, FSC. FSC is considered the gold standard in third party certifications of forests so we can be confident that the forests providing our cherry wood will be around to enjoy for many generations… just like our cherry wood furniture.

Furniture showroom: handmade handcrafted furniture from VT
As Annette's house nears completion and the construction crews begin to dwindle, we are starting to make plans for the re-opening of our Vermont Woods Studios showroom which is housed on Annette's farm estate.

After the fire last year, and in the midst of this economic downturn, we began to re-think our showroom strategy.   Because our furniture is all made to order, and 95% of our customers are ordering their furniture online, we have decided not to maintain a large inventory anymore– at least not for the immediate future.

We'll still be operating out of Annette's farm estate in Vernon VT, but instead of a large showroom, we'll have a small furniture boutique in our sales office that will be available by appointment only.

Downsizing our showroom allows us to pass a significant savings on to our customers, the vast majority of who do not use the showroom.  Once the economy bounces back, we do plan to begin opening a few new showrooms: one in Vermont and a few others in locations yet to be announced.

Craftsmanship
In the meantime, we do have a couple of options for those who would like to see our furniture in person. Give us a call or email us and we'll discuss the best option for you:

*     If you're looking to see a specific piece that you've found on our website, contact us and we'll link you up with the craftsperson who makes that piece. Oftentimes, our craftspeople have a small showroom adjacent to their studios where they welcome visitors.

*     If on the other hand, you're looking to get a general idea of our quality and craftsmanship, contact us to arrange an appointment to visit our Vernon furniture boutique. Here we have a small number of pieces made by various craftspeople that can convey an overview of our styles and craftsmanship.

Give us a call if you are interested in learning more about how to see and purchase our handmade furniture.

Sustainable Furniture Council

It's been about three years since we at Vermont Woods Studios joined a handful of other green furniture companies to initiate the development of a non-profit, standard-setting group called the Sustainable Furniture Council, SFC.

Since that day, what a success story the SFC has been in educating members and consumers about the characteristics and benefits of green, eco-friendly, environmentally safe furniture.

SFC's latest brainchild is the DesigninGreen Leadership team which consists of pre-eminent designers like Kathy Ireland, Alexander Julian, Vladimir Kagan and Tom Felicia (from Dress My Nest).  Find more about this sustainable furniture project at the SFC website.

Custom-bookcase-doors

I love it when customers share photos of their furniture after it's been installed in their homes.  It really brings our work full circle and gives us a great feeling about what we're doing.

See the narrow space available Bill P. had for this bookcase?  We customized the width of our Cherry Moon Bookcase so it would fit perfectly into this space.  Bill and his wife wanted doors on the bottom half of the unit too, so we added them.  And we made the unit shorter so it didn't obscure light switches and outlets.

Bookcase
Bill needed another bookcase to be customized for a taller height and without doors.  This one turned out to be just the ticket.

It doesn't take long for me to to fill up the shelves either Bill 😉

We're so happy that you love your new furniture!
