Modern-american-bedroom-furniture We've been writing about the fact that up to 90% of the wood furniture you see in America today is imported and furthermore, it is likely that the wood was harvested illegally from one of the world's rapidly disappearing rainforests.  Well, I guess others are beginning to write about that too and happily, we're seeing more and more customers asking about where our wood furniture comes from.

It's not just the environment and the fact that American made furniture is superior in terms of quality that customers are concerned with.  Another part of this equation is that Americans want to support sustainable communities and help provide American jobs.  Over the last 30 years, tens of thousands of jobs for highly skilled furniture makers have been moved overseas, as so called "American furniture companies" have moved their manufacturing operations to China, Vietnam and other third world countries.  In the process, many skilled workers (and their families) in North Carolina, Maine and Vermont have suffered job loss and their once-vibrant communities have turned into ghost towns.

At Vermont Woods Studios Furniture and other American furniture companies like Moosehead Furniture in Maine we're working to restore those high quality jobs and help maintain the tradition of fine handcrafted furniture in America.  You can help us by becoming a fan on facebook or following us on Twitter.  Thanks!

Vermont-fine-furniture Looking for authentic handmade wood furniture, made in the good 'ol USA? It's not so easy to find it anymore, is it?  Most Americans think of North Carolina as the fine furniture capitol of the USA, but over the past 30 years, that has changed. The furniture companies we think of as being quintessentially American — for example Thomasville, Broyhill, Ethan Allen and Lane — no longer make much, if any furniture in the USA. Instead they outsource their furniture to factories in China, Vietnam and other third world countries.

So where does one go to find authentic, high quality, handmade wood furniture? It turns out that Vermont is now considered to be the fine furniture capitol of the country. By unofficial count, some 2000 small wood furniture makers dot the rural Vermont countryside, taking advantage of the heavily forested nature of our state for supply of natural, eco-friendly raw materials.

At Vermont Woods Studios Furniture we represent many of these craftsmen, providing a low cost venue for the marketing and sale of their work.  Our mission is to collaborate with Vermont's fine furniture makers, enabling them to spend more time in their studios doing what they do best:  making beautiful, solid wood furniture.   At the same time we can focus on our expertise: customer service– thus creating greater efficiency and the best possible prices for your heirloom quality handmade furniture.  Give us a call to learn more about Vermont's many fine furniture makers and how to bring their work into your home or office.

Solid-wood-furniture A customer called yesterday asking if we sold solid wood furniture.  When we explained to him that all of our furniture is handmade of solid wood that is harvested locally and regionally he couldn't believe it.  He had been searching for solid wood furniture for quite awhile and was frustrated by the fact that upon closer inspection, none of the companies he had contacted actually did sell solid wood furniture.

The problem is, there is no universally agreed upon definition for solid wood furniture.  So, as with claims that furniture is American made, we find that so called solid wood furniture is often made of particle board, pressed cardboard and thin sheets of fake wood veneers.

At Vermont Woods Studios we still make our furniture in the USA (in Vermont, actually) and we do indeed make it with solid hardwoods: cherry, maple, walnut and oak.  Give us a call to learn more.

Computer Workstation: Desk, Bookcase and Hutch

We just received this photo from one of our craftsman.  Wouldn't this computer workstation help you organize your home office and work more efficiently?

The unit is made of sustainably harvested, solid cherry wood and it has a non-toxic lacquer finish that provides great protection from the rigors of all that hard work you're doing at home. If you accidentally  spill a cup of coffee (or glass of wine) on it, it's none the worse for wear.
