How One Day and One Small State Can Make a Difference
In a state with a population just over 600,000 Vermont Gives Day shows how a small group of people can make a big difference. On June 7th, the state of Vermont launched its first giving day, using social media as a way to get the message out. A simple hashtag #VTGives was found trending on Twitter and leads people to learn about this day of giving.
It’s Field Trip Time For the Kids at Vernon Elementary School
Every Vermonter looks forward to the sound of Spring Peepers (those little green frogs that sing their hearts out) in March and April, signalling that Spring is finally here. And if you haven’t already investigated where those sounds are coming from, well you really need to get started. For the last few years, Vermont Woods Studios has been affording this opportunity to the third graders at our local school, Vernon Elementary. They get to spend some time outdoors in the forest and we get to go along for the ride. It’s great fun!
Here at Vermont Woods Studios we are committed to staying active within the community around us. That is why each year we volunteer and donate as much as we can to organizations local to the Vernon, VT area.
Earlier this week, we partnered with the Vermont Foodbank (VFB) in Brattleboro, VT to help distribute 500 holiday food boxes to those in need as part of the Foodbank’s annual Pack to Give Back event. Families in and around the Brattleboro area that are struggling to put food on the table are given a chance to collect their holiday food items so they too, can enjoy and celebrate the holiday season.
Volunteers help with traffic control, gather food vouchers, mark the amount of food each family gets and help distribute the food to each person.
The day started bright and early on a blustery but sunny Monday morning. We gathered in the VFB’s office to warm up with coffee and tea and from there we were taken through their warehouse of donations and back outside to an assembly line of food. For every voucher a family had, they were given that amount of corresponding food at each point in the assembly line.
The first stop in the line was bottled water donated by FEMA, which is able to donate as long as there isn’t a need from a disaster, so that the supplies don’t go to waste. Each family that wanted it, was given an extra pack of water as a lot of the families in need don’t have regular access to clean water. The next stop in the line was butternut squash, then they were given care packages, pies, onions, apples, carrots, bread and frozen chickens.
Volunteers helped move the food from the stations into every person’s car so they wouldn’t have to get out.
This event was the third and final stop for the Pack to Give Back tour and we are delighted to have been a part of it. During 2015, the Vermont Foodbank was able to distribute 10 million pounds of food through food rescue, direct donations and gleaning. Volunteers are a crucial part of the Foodbank, assisting with distribution, food collection and food packing.

Today’s the day! We’re participating in two great Brattleboro benefit auctions. If you are looking for a good excuse for a day trip to Vermont, there couldn’t be a better day for it! Find some unique local crafts & merchandise while you support a great cause. One benefit auction goes to support the Windham County Humane Society and the other supports the River Gallery School!
Which Brattleboro benefit auction will you pick?
The 8th annual “Wags to Riches” cocktail party and auction directly supports the loving care of more than 800 animals who will come through the doors of WCHS in need of help this year. Attendees will have the opportunity to bid on a wide variety of live and silent auction items, including exotic weekend getaways, unique local art and jewelery, gift certificates to local restraunts and shops, and much more! The cost is $50 per person and includes a drink ticket and light dining. We donated a 3-Day weekend stay at Stratton Mountain Resort and a beautiful POLYWOOD Adirondack chair to be auctioned off!
Proceeds from the 25th annual River Gallery School auction goes to support this “vibrant hub for Brattleboro’s artistic community, with bright, spacious studios on Main Street overlooking the Whetstone Brook.” The school was founded in 1976–and has since offered classes, community workshops, and summer and school vacation programs for students of all ages. We donated a Shaker style American made 4 poster bed to be auctioned off at this event!
Spending 8 hours a day at a desk can be tough. No matter how awesome I think my job is (I get to share the story of an eco-friendly, Vermont business via social media–how cool is that?) there are some days when sitting in front of a computer screen is just plain hard. And then there are days that remind me of why I decided to apply at Vermont Woods Studios in the first place, and yesterday was certainly one of them.
We love animals. We really do. From the creepy crawly ones that spend their time sitting in murky pond water, to the fuzzy ones you cuddle up with on your couch. We love to support the organizations that work to give them better lives too! Earlier in the year several of the Green Team members attended the Windham County Humane Society’s biggest fundraiser of the year, Wags to Riches. We even had a few donated items up for auction at the fundraiser! Fun was had and animals were helped and all in all we had a great time.
So when we saw that the Windham County Humane Society was in real need of food for the animals who stay at the shelter, we were more than eager to help out. With Peggy’s help buying a few extra bags, Nina and I gathered up some kibble and headed over to WCHS. I try not to go there too often, because I might end up coming home with something, like a new puppy, but the WCHS staff was happy and helpful and it was a great visit!
