Attention to Detail is Important When Choosing New Furniture

“Is view A better or B? Is B better than C?” When you hear that, you may be imagining a trip to the eye doctor. Let’s go with that image. When the Doctor is testing your vision and you’re looking through the different lenses to the projected letters on the wall, he/she will ask you which view is better. At first, the changes may have subtle differences but the more adjustments they make, the more things start to come into focus. The same can be said for some of our styles of furniture. But just as you are careful to tell the Doctor which view is more clear, you want to be as careful when choosing your furniture.

Three of the beds we offer, the Vermont Shaker Moon Bed, the Cherry Moon Bed and the New England Shaker Bed, all have very similar simple designs with clean lines and gently arching curves in the headboards and footboards. The main difference takes place in the legs. Each bed offers a uniquely designed leg and subtle differences throughout the entire piece.

Here’s a breakdown of each bed:

Vermont Shaker Moon Bed– A simple and clean design with four-sided tapered legs and a simple flat cut on the top of each leg. The top of the headboard stands 43” off the ground for a platform bed frame and 47” for a mattress & box spring frame. At its center, the top of the footboard stands at 20” for a platform frame and 24” for a mattress & box spring frame. It’s available in Cherry, Maple or Walnut and can be fitted for underbed storage.

Cherry Moon Bed– A solid wood bed with contemporary reverse-tapered legs, rounded edges and an angled cut on the top of the legs. The top of the headboard stands 42” off the ground for a platform bed frame and 46” for a mattress & box spring frame. At its center, the top of the footboard stands at 20” for a platform frame and 24” for a mattress & box spring frame.  It’s available in Cherry, Maple or Walnut and can be fitted for underbed storage.

New England Shaker Bed– Designed similarly to the the Vermont Shaker and Cherry Moon beds, this bed also features clean lines and a simple design, with partial one-sided tapered legs and an angled cut on the top of the leg. The top of the headboard sits 40.5” off the ground for a platform bed frame and 45.5” for a mattress & box spring frame. At its center, the top of the footboard stands 24” from the ground. It’s available in Cherry, Maple, Oak or Walnut and offers a variety of Finish options.

At quick glance, these differences may go unnoticed–just like when the Eye Doctor first changes the lenses during your eye test–but in learning what details to compare, you’ll be able to train your eye to spot the variations more easily each time.

Shaker Desk and Bookcase

Use Bookcases to Showcase More Than Just Your Encyclopedia Collection!

One of the things I love about visiting other people’s homes is seeing what statement they’re making about their personality. Are they sentimental, creative or conservative? Do they like to display a lot of personal items or keep things more uniform? The spaces I enjoy the most are the ones that tell a unique story. From the layout, color and material of the furniture to the number of pictures hanging on the wall, you want your space to represent you.

I like to think of a design space with the same mindset I think of my wardrobe. I dress a certain way to portray an image that is representative of my personality.

As Coco Chanel said, “Dress shabbily and they remember the dress; dress impeccably and they remember the woman.”

That saying is true when you’re decorating your home, too. We’ve all been to one of those houses where you walk in and you’re instantly overwhelmed because it’s covered head-to-toe with “stuff”. To avoid doing that (or simply over decorating) you can focus your collection of home goods and keepsakes to designated areas.

Instead of using up precious table and counter space, a unique way to showcase your collectibles is with a bookcase. It’s also a nice way to break up your space and can compliment your other furniture. We have a variety of beautiful, handcrafted bookcases, filing cabinets and occasional tables and during our Home Office & Living Room Furniture Sale*, the time has never been better to shop and save.

I’ve included a sampling of bookcases from our collection to highlight the different ways you can furnish your space to tell your story.

If you’re not sure where to start or what your looking for, use the wardrobe analogy: When I’m looking to refresh my wardrobe, I often pick a theme or style as a starting point, do the same for your space. Is it organization that you’re in need of, protection for fragile artifacts or storage space? Once you’ve determined your need, pick a bookcase or cabinet and go from there.

Recently my fellow office inhabitant, Sean Henry, began spear-heading our mission to obtain more customer photos or ‘real life’ images of our furniture.  His unbroken concentration certainly lends much, sometimes unnecessary, dedication to his projects- so, as the more vocally inclined, I’ve taken it upon myself to help spread the word via VWS blog.  This word is not just a want for more customer photos but the undying effort of our sales team to obtain these images.

Why customer photos?  Well, the long and short of it is best told visually.  This is a bedroom set:

Which do you want more?  And it isn’t even just the marketing power behind these inviting images but more the representational power of them.  These handcrafted works of art are meant to please your eye and provide restful sleep or feed your family or hold your cable box- they’re meant for your home!

Fresh eyed and bushy tailed, Sean joined our crew only a few months ago, eager to make his mark and share his ideas (or “i-dears”, as he calls them).  Though he’s tossed quite a few light bulbs around, it is really his re-kindling of the long forgotten ‘obtain customer photos’ mission that’s become his baby.  Our white glove delivery crew might have barely made it out the door before the proud new furniture owner receives an email from Sean, adorned with this thoughtfully designed marquee:

Customer Photos

So, if you’re a perspective buyer or just a handmade furniture fan- take a look at our customer photos album on Facebook or the Testimonials page on our website.  If you already own a piece of Vermont Woods Studios furniture, well heck- we’d love to see it!  Do it for Sean, at least.

Natural Cherry Beds | Real Solid Wood | American Made in Vermont
This week’s best seller, the Cherry Moon Bed is handmade in Montpelier of solid natural cherry wood.  It has simple elegant lines like Vermont’s iconic Shaker furniture.  But it’s refined curves and reverse-tapered legs add a modern Asian flair.  Buy it in a bedroom furniture set and save 20%!

A Great Example of Vermont Style Furniture

Natural cherry beds are our most popular item at Vermont Woods Studios so I guess it’s no surprise that our Best Seller last week was the Cherry Moon Bed.  Actually this bed is a frequent flyer on the Best Seller list.  I think that’s because it’s such a good example of what’s best about Vermont style furniture.

The Cherry Moon Bed is handmade in Montpelier of solid natural cherry wood.  It has simple elegant lines like Vermont’s iconic Shaker furniture.  But it’s refined curves and reverse-tapered legs add a modern Asian flair.  The finish on this bed is a hand-rubbed natural oil that brings out the beauty of the cherrywood grain.  If you re-oil the bed every year it develops a rich patina that gives it even more depth and character over time.
