Much of the bedroom furniture purchased here at Vermont Woods Studios is customized to meet specific style or dimensional criteria specified by our customers. Contrary to popular belief, custom bedroom furniture can be surprisingly affordable! Over the coming weeks I’ll share our Top 5 Tips for customizing hardwood furniture.
Here’s my #1 Tip and it applies to bedroom chests, dressers, armoires and night stands as well as any other case goods that have doors or drawers:
It sounds like a small change but it’s the quickest and easiest way to get a custom look for your furniture. Of course with some dressers and chests, the pulls are an integral part of the overall design. Our Cherry Moon and Modern American collections would be an example of this and you wouldn’t want to change pulls.
But many interior designers are taking a fresh look at Shaker and Mission style furniture and saying, “hey I can jazz this up and create a whole new style by changing the pulls.” You can find a variety of different pulls on our website and in our showroom at Stonehurst. Each of our independent workshops carries their own collection of pulls so if you’re ordering online you’ll want to give us a call to make sure we can match a given pull with the chest or dresser you’re interested in. You can also send us your own pulls and we’ll install them!
Stay tuned for more tips on how to customize your bedroom furniture easily and affordably. Next up: combining two contrasting wood tones (like maple and cherry) into a single piece.

We’ve been showcasing exclusively Vermont made fine furniture for nearly 8 years. We’re very proud to be a part of the 200+ year old tradition Vermont’s craftspeople have earned. But a number of prestigious and talented craftsmen from beyond our Green Mountain borders have been asking to join the Vermont Woods Studios network of independent furniture makers. At the same time, our customer base is growing faster than our capacity within Vermont. So what do you think we should do?
Thus far we’ve declined to expand outside of Vermont. But in the last couple years we’ve been getting quite close to the craftspeople at a certain New Hampshire workshop that’s just a short distance across the state line. After much discussion we’ve made a decision to bring Peter and his group of talented craftsmen into our circle of fine woodworkers. Peter’s family has been making New England furniture for 6 generations– creating each piece of furniture one at a time and paying close attention to the details our customers look for. We are excited to bring them on board and looking forward to your feedback on their work.
Style-wise, you might call Peter’s Brandon furniture “transitional” as it blends traditional Shaker style with modern curves. The Brandon bed is shown above in natural solid cherry wood, although it’s also available in maple and walnut. Three choices of matching nightstands are available, as well as a 10 Drawer Dresser and a Gent’s Chest — all available in natural cherry, maple or walnut wood.
The Brandon bedroom set is the first New Hampshire furniture collection we’ve added and you will soon be able to see it showcased at Stonehurst. Stop by and let us know what you think or send us a comment on Facebook. Look for more fine furniture from New Hampshire coming in the next few weeks!

Our American made bedroom furniture sale wraps up at midnight this Thursday, April 18th with up to 20% savings on real, handcrafted wooden furniture made right here in Vermont. I know you’re used to seeing bedroom furniture sales that advertise 40 or 60 or 80% off when you’re shopping at the big box stores but those companies have to mark up everyday prices in order to mark down for sales. We don’t like that kind of gimmick.
At Vermont Woods Studios we work very hard to price our furniture accurately and make sure that everyone involved in the purchase has a win: the customer, the craftsman, the forester and logger who sustainably harvest the wood and of course, the environment. We realize that in the age of the Internet, price comparison often rules above all else. So we have a competitive pricing policy to ensure you get the best price available for the quality, shipping and service we offer. And we guarantee our 100% American made furniture for a lifetime of service to you and your family.
When you place a piece of our Vermont made furniture in your home we want you to feel good knowing that you have paid a fair price and obtained a great value. You can see customer comments about price and value as well as customer photos of our furniture on Facebook or in our testimonials page. Want to join the conversation? Comment below, on our Facebook or call Sean (who is– according to Liz–our Customer Feedback Czar) and weigh in with your two cents!

Copeland’s Dominion bedroom furniture set was our best seller last week. I love this picture, but the cool thing about Dominion is that you can customize it online to look exactly like this (above) or give it a totally different style. The photo above shows this high end bedroom set in natural cherry wood, although you can change the color online and add one of 3 stains: cognac cherry, saddle cherry or smoke cherry. For example, here’s a photo of the same Dominion bedroom in saddle cherry, which is darker than natural cherry and looks similar to walnut wood.
You can also customize the Dominion bedroom set by changing the shape of the top of each chest or dresser. In the photo above the chest on the left has a top that’s flush with the sides of the case, whereas the chest on the right has an over-hanging top. It creates a whole different look!
Furthermore, if you choose small, round mushroom shaped drawer pulls along with the flush top (shown left), you’ve got a variation of traditional Shaker style furniture. But by selecting brushed nickle bars for drawer pulls and pairing them with the over-hanging top, you’ve created a much different, modern contemporary look for the same chest.
Dominion beds are also highly customizable. Copeland offers 4 main bed styles: the regular Dominion Bed (with choice of 4 different headboards), a storage bed version of it, the Dominion Bed with Leather Headboard (choose ebony, coffee or white colored leather) and a storage bed version of it.
Check it out! This is your chance to design your own bedroom furniture and have it handcrafted especially for you, by Vermont craftsmen. Copeland furniture is affordable too and offers a great value for your money, plus we guarantee it for a lifetime. So what are you waiting for?

Natural cherry beds are our most popular item at Vermont Woods Studios so I guess it’s no surprise that our Best Seller last week was the Cherry Moon Bed. Actually this bed is a frequent flyer on the Best Seller list. I think that’s because it’s such a good example of what’s best about Vermont style furniture.
The Cherry Moon Bed is handmade in Montpelier of solid natural cherry wood. It has simple elegant lines like Vermont’s iconic Shaker furniture. But it’s refined curves and reverse-tapered legs add a modern Asian flair. The finish on this bed is a hand-rubbed natural oil that brings out the beauty of the cherrywood grain. If you re-oil the bed every year it develops a rich patina that gives it even more depth and character over time.
Many of our customers bought cherry beds as part of the Cherry Moon Bedroom Furniture Collection which is on sale today (Winter Bedroom Sale). The discount is 10% off any single piece, 15% off two pieces or 20% off 3 or more pieces (plus free shipping and delivery). The sale ends next week, but if you miss it, you can always use the Cherry Moon Bedroom Set page to purchase furniture in this collection.
At Vermont Woods Studios you can always save 20% buying cherry beds or most any other furniture as a set. We save on shipping when we ship multiple pieces so we pass that on to our customers. Shop for discount sets on these pages:
If you don’t see the exact combination of furniture pieces you’re looking for in one of our sets, give Liz, Sean or Heather a call. They’ll take your order over the phone or in person and make sure you get the set discount if it’s available.

If you’re shopping for top quality bedroom furniture sets, I’m sure you’ve noticed they’re priced considerably higher than the run of the mill sets you’ll find at Jordan’s or Bernie and Phyls. But if you want timeless, real hardwood furniture you’ll have for a lifetime, (something you’ll never have to replace) then what you’re really interested in is getting the best value, not the lowest price, right? My suggestion: first find the best quality furniture you can afford (here’s a solid wood furniture buying guide to help with that) in the style and wood species you love.
Second, check to see where it’s made. If it’s imported furniture, you probably want to keep shopping. Honestly, I rarely hear complaints about the quality of virtually any American made, solid hardwood furniture (and the more local you buy, the better chance you have of getting the craftsperson or manufacturer to stand behind the product over it’s lifetime). On the other hand, there are dozens of consumer review sites filled with complaints about the imported furniture products found at big box stores like Ikea, Ashley and Bob’s. Quality can be quite poor and there’s little chance of getting satisfactory customer service.
Once you’ve found your favorite top quality, American made bedroom furniture, crafted of real solid hardwood, then start to work with the craftsman or retailer to get their best discount price. Remember however that American furniture involves using real, legal, sustainably harvested wood and American craftsmanship. Furthermore, US furniture makers don’t typically “mark up to mark down” so you’re unlikely to find “discounts up to 80%”. But often there is room for some negotiation.
At Vermont Woods Studios for instance, we have a standing discount of 20% on bedroom sets* plus we offer a discount on full service white glove shipping and delivery when customers are buying 3 or more pieces. Like many online retailers, we offer a coupon code (BEDROOMSET20) for customers who prefer to purchase fine furniture online (be sure to “update cart” to get the discount). Otherwise customers can give us a call or stop by our showroom to receive the discount.
So my advice, if you’re shopping for the best price on high quality, real solid wood beds, chests, dressers, armoires, night stands, mirrors, blanket boxes and such is to focus on quality and style first. Find the American made bedroom furniture you love that will last a lifetime and then negotiate on price afterwards. My sense is that in doing the research you’ll find most USA made fine furniture is honestly priced and retailers are looking to give both you and the craftsman a fair deal.
