Sharon and Margaux
On January 4 of this year, while hiking with her husband Jeff and his family on a nature trail in Kenya, our neighbor's daughter-in-law Sharon Brown and her 1 year old daughter Margaux were killed during a tragic encounter with an elephant. We knew and loved Sharon and were lucky enough to meet adorable little Margaux when they were home visiting family last summer. Words fail me — I don't know how to express our sadness and sympathy for Jeff and family. But I did want to mention that Jeff has set up a memorial fund for Sharon and Margaux and it will be used to further Sharon's passion, which is quite similar to ours: environmental education and reforestation.
In Sharon's memory, a facility will be built at the International School of Kenya, ISK where Sharon worked as a librarian and Environment Club Advisor. The facility will house a greenhouse, nursery and garden which will be used to grow seedlings of indigenous tree species for targeted reforestation projects. A fitting tribute and one I'm sure Sharon would be proud of.
