When World Wildlife Fund‘s WWF Earth Hour project started in 2007 we were a fledgling startup company. But I was excited about the project because we were looking for comradery as a small business driven by an environmental mission. We turned our lights out during that first #EarthHour in Sydney, Australia and have done so every year since.
WWF makes it simple and fun to come together, make a statement and make a difference in the fight against global climate change. Just turn your lights off tonight from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm, local time. It’s a great time for a candlelight dinner or a little star-gazing. No matter where you live, there’s an Earth Hour 2017 event nearby where you can celebrate and meet like-minded people. Use WWF’s interactive map to find events near you. Last year Earth Hour was celebrated in 178 countries and territories across 7 continents and even aboard the International Space Station.
Focus on Climate Change & Forest Conservation
Earth Hour focuses mainly on energy issues that affect climate change but they also speak to forest conservation (a subject near & dear to the heart of this sustainable wood furniture company). “Forests play an irrefutable role in climate change. Building a climate-safe future requires us to act today to protect these important carbon sinks against massive degradation and deforestation- one tree, one action at a time.”
Plant Trees to Fight Climate Change
We’re always planting trees… at least one for every order we take. Earlier this week we planted 100 trees to commemorate the 2017 International Day of Forests. Since we started Vermont Woods Studios in 2005, we’ve planted almost 50,000 trees. Read more about our mission of forest conservation on our website.
Share Your Earth Hour 2017 Photos With Us
If you send us photos of what you did to celebrate Earth Hour, we’ll post them on our Facebook. We’ll also plant 25 trees for you to help restore the forest where monarch butterflies over-winter in Mexico. Our partners at Forests for Monarchs (and the butterflies) will love you forever.
